A boy sits in the wreckage of a building after a bombing raid of London during WW2. Children in London were usually evacuated to the countryside to avoid the bombing. By the war’s end, just under 30,000 Londoners had been killed by the bombing, and over 50,000 seriously injured, tens of thousands of buildings were destroyed, and hundreds of thousands of people were made homeless.

Girls delivering ice in September 1918. During WW1, women took over the jobs the men fighting overseas left behind. From the early 19th century to just after WW1, long before refrigerators became commonplace in every home, icemen would go around selling and delivering ice from wagons, carts, or motor trucks everyday. ‘Newsies’ enjoying a smoke break in St. Louis, Missouri, 1910. Newsies sold newspapers in the big cities and were usually homeless orphan boys who had no other way to make money. Each morning they would get up and buy newspapers, then they would find a street corner with lots of traffic and sell the papers for a profit. Hopefully they could sell all the papers as if they didn’t they might actually lose money.

当你与经历过战争的人谈话时,看着他们的眼睛,你就会知道和平是多么的珍贵。
